Last night I was lucky enough to snag a couple of tickets to the Of Monsters and Men concert at the Academy of Sciences. For non locals, the academy of sciences is a really cool museum in the Golden Gate park that also happens to be a leading research and educational institution. The exhibits are entrancing and leave you inspired. Living in a city it can be easy to forget what it’s like to be around wildlife. To be around bugs and butterflies and and what not. The museum transports you, and it’s kind of magical.
On Thursdays they do a nightlife series so that you can enjoy all of these wonders while also enjoying some great music and adult beverages, which makes it infinitely more awesome, in my opinion. Last night Of Monsters and Men performed, with an opening from Papa.
My obsession with Of Monsters and Men is nothing new, and last night’s performance just cemented my love of them. I genuinely love all of their songs. Every. Single. One. They are just that good.
The show itself was incredible, and despite only being able to see the back of someones neck 99% of the time (oh the perils of being petite), I still had a blast. Occasionally Kevin would lift me up and I could actually see what was going on, to which I would exclaim “a flute! she is playing the flute!” or “Oh my god there’s a trumpet too!” It’s really quite a different experience when you can’t see anything, and next time I’m at a non-stadium type venue I’m going to bring a step stool. Seriously. Six inches would make a world of a difference.
The nightlife themes vary weekly, and I have yet to come across one that sounds anything less than awesome. They can range from salsa dancing to sustainable farming to crafty extravaganzas. I mean, the August 30th theme is “bacon wrapped.” A theme about bacon! Does it get much better than that?
I’ll be back, that’s for sure, and if you happen to find yourself in San Francisco on a Thursday, I highly recommend checking it out as well.
Happy Friday, and enjoy some Monsters and Men for yourself below!
